Biography
 

Mary Squires is a candidate for the position of Georgia Commissioner of Insurance; Safety Fire Commissioner; Industrial Loan Commissioner; and Comptroller General.

In 1980 Mary received a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of South Florida and spent the last three decades working in both the public and private sectors.

Mary's public sector service began in 1986 when she enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard as Military Police Legal Specialist. Mary completed Officer Candidate School in 1988 and served as Communications-Electronics Officer and Nuclear Biological Chemical Warfare Officer. She was honorably discharged in 1996 with the rank of Captain.

Mary served in the Georgia General Assembly for six years. She was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1998 and the Georgia Senate in 2002. Mary focused on health benefits, insurance and juvenile law.

Mary's private sector experience began in 1981 with the International Franchise Association in Washington, D.C. In 1982 she joined the Hodges Corporation a Georgia government relations and association management firm. Mary's association management clients were in the areas of higher education and health care. Her government relations clients were in the areas of health care services, property and casualty and life and health insurance, and banking. In 1995 Mary joined AT&T Global Information Systems as an Environmental Health and Safety Manager. She was responsible for bringing the division in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and DOT safety and hazardous materials regulations.

In 2007 Mary became the Executive Director of the Georgia Society of Professional Benefit Administrators, Inc., a self-insured health care trade association; and became the Director of the Olive Industry Association, a national research and trade association.

Squires was elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1998. Squires served two terms in the State House (1999-2003) and one term in the Georgia State Senate (2003-2005). In addition to her legislative experience, Squires served ten years in the Georgia Army National Guard as both an enlistedman and an officer. Mary Squires currently is the Executive Director of the Georgia Society of Professional Benefit Administrators, Inc., a self-insured health care trade association . Squires also serves as the Director of the Olive Industry Association, a national agriculture research and trade association. Squires and her husband Tom West of Augusta currently reside in Atlanta, Georgia and have four children.
